 Prefatory Notes
    • We have minutes for the meetings on April 26, 1834, March 21 1835, and May 30, 1835;  the May 30, 1835 minutes schedule the next meeting for August 29-30, 1835.
    • We have a photocopy of these minutes, the origional of which are in the archives of Lambuth University.
    • These minutes are the oldest official records of Spence Chapel extant to our present knowledge;  we hope to discover additional records as our explorations continue. 
    • The handwritten minutes are difficult at points to read with certainty.
    • Wadesboro is also spelled Waidsboro in the 1935 Minutes
     
April 26, 1834
[The report begins with a list of churches on the Circuit:] 
  1. Paducah
  2. Isham or Johnson?
  3. Aclana?
  4. Spence or Spence's or Spencer or Spencer's
  5. Southerland's
  6. Johnson's
  7. Oglesby
  8. Ragsdales
  9. Campground
  10. Powells
  11. Wyatts
A second column origionally listed various sums of money, but the only two legible are 50 cents each for Southerlands and Campmpground.  The total amount is $9, of which $4.50 was paid  to Geo. W. Martin and $4.50 paid to Geo. Waleasey?. 

"The Quarterly meeting conference xxxxx held for the Wadesboro circuit at Paducah on the 26th day of April 1834.  The following members were present:  G. Martin in the chair, GWaleasey? xxxx xxxx Peter Slaten, Abraham Weldon  Sylvester Wyatt, LH Johnson, & James McPhereson --  EG Dickens appointed Secretary." 

"Q: Are there any complaints or appeals?" 
A:  None. 
Q.  Are any license to grant or renew? 
A. None. 

"Samuel Wilson is released from serving as circuit Stewart and RG [Stalen or Slaten] appointed xxx 

"Thomas H. Grubb released as recording xxxx And [Ebrand?] appointed his stead. 

"Resolved that this circuit be laid off into seven districts by the recording stewart with the aid of the preachers;  that is a district to each Stewert & that it be the duty of each Stewert visit each xxxxx in this charge and  impress on his mind the necessity of urging the members of xxx xxxx xxx to xxxx the sum of 12½ cents xxx for xxxx throughout the circuit for the purpose of paying the Preachers who may labour on the circuit.  Resolved that it is the duty of the recording steward to furnish a copy of the foregoing resolution to each Stewart. 

"Q: Whence shall the next quarterly meeting be held? 
A.  The next q. Meeting will be held at Bxxxx

March 21, 1835
"At the first Quarterly Conference for the xxxx held at Paducah March 21, 1835 the following members were attending: 

"GWD Harris, G McCreasey, B. Adams, J. Adams Hatch? Pirtle, xxx Johnson, Peter Slayton, Meorgau? Williams, Sylvester Wyatt, Larnes? McPhereson, Clayborn? Pyrtle. 

"Q 1st:  Are there any complaints or appeals? 
A.  There are none. 
Q 2nd:  Are there any licenses to grant or renew. 
The license of xxxx Pyrtle an exhorter renewed.  Peter Slayton appointed Circuit Stewart.  Abraham Weldon appointed circuit stewart.  Resolved that the Quarterly meeting conference for the Waidsboro Circuit considering the evils resulting from interferance in drinking xxxx xxxx spirits either moderately or immoderately and will use their influence in supplying the evil both by precept and example. 

Resolved that GWD Harris be appointed to procure the xx of the foregoing resolutions in the Western Methodist.

 Concluding Notes
 
    • These minutes contains many names and other information that may serve as leads to further exploration of the history of Spence Chapel 
    • Note the listing of  J. Spense in attendance at the May 30, 1835 meeting
    • As apparently 11 churches were a part of this circuit, the names of persons involved would be from among these other churches as well as from Spence Chapel
    • We will continue to study our copy of these minutes, and to make corrections in the transcription as appropriate
    • Note the variations in spelling of names (and other words) both between and within the documents
