1 Samuel 1:20, 26-28

and

1 Samuel 2:1-8

27   For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:
28   Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.

1 Samuel 1:27-28

Quotes & Notes
  •  Lent him-But not with a purpose to require him again. Whatever we give to God, may upon this account be said to be lent to him, that tho' we may not recall it, yet he will certainly repay it, to our unspeakable advantage. He worshipped-Not Eli, but young Samuel, who is spoken of in this and the foregoing verse, and who was capable of worshipping God in some sort, at least with external adoration.   - John Wesley Notes
  •  This and the following chapter are connected in most copies of the Septuagint and Vulgate thus: And Anna worshipped, and said, My soul is strengthened in the Lord, &c. It is very likely that the whole passage, from the beginning of ver. 26 to the end of ver. 10 of the ensuing chapter, {1Sa 1:26-2:10,} contains the words of Hannah alone; and that even the clause, He worshipped the Lord there, should be, And she worshipped the Lord there, and prayed, and said, &c. Indeed this latter clause is wanting in the Polyglot Septuagint.  - Adam Clarke Commentary
  • And he (l) worshipped the LORD there. (l) Meaning, Eli gave thanks to God for her.
     - 1599 Geneva Bible Notes
  • No blessings are more dear, and none give greater comfort, than those which are gratefully received from, and heartily devoted to the Lord.  - Family Bible Notes
  • She gave up this one child, and the Lord sent her five others ere long. The Lord takes care to be in no one's debt, he rewards plenteously those who cheerfully make sacrifices for his cause. - Spurgeon Devotional Commentary
  • lent him. or, returned him, whom I have obtained by petition, to the Lord.  The word {hishilteehoo}, "I have lent him," is the {Hiphil}
conjugation of {shu„l,} "he asked," (ver. 27,) and refers to the name of Samuel.  * he shall be. or, he whom I have obtained by petition shall be returned. he worshipped. Ge 24:26,48,52; 2Ti 3:15   - Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Pastor's New Sunday School Class

Greetings!

We started this new Sunday School Class at 10 a.m. each week.  We'll meet outside in the pavilion, weather permitting -- otherwise in the fellowship hall by the donut table :)  We'll experiment with the format each week... here's this Sunday's agenda:

  • Open with prayer
  • Brainstorm listing of current events, problems, activities, etc going on in the lives of those present
  • Discussion of how we are currently:
    1. Doing no harm
    2. Doing good
    3. Using the means of grace (Private Prayer, Bible Study, Holy Communion, Christian Conversation, Public Worship)
  • Discussion of ideas & highlights of how the International Sunday School Lesson text for this week may (or may not) apply to what is going on in the personal lives of those present.
  • Ideas for improving the class structure and content next week
  • Closing prayer
  • Fellowship, Mingling, Eating, Leaving, Etc. in the Fellowship Hall

For those unable to attend on Sunday morning, and for all of us who would like to continue the discussions throughout the week by email, I've set up a mailing list discussion group at SpenceChapelSundaySchool@Memphis-UMC.org
Click here to Subscribe.  (or here to UNsubscribe).

I also host the LivingWeb Sunday School Project, so you might like to drop by there for additional insights and discussion about this weeks Bible text.

Thanks!
