2 John 4-9 & 3 John 3-11

And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

2 John 6

Quotes & Notes
  • And this is the proof of true love, universal obedience built on the love of God.   - John Wesley Notes

  • Our love is shown and proved by our walking according to the commandments of God; for love is the principle of obedience..
    - Adam Clarke Commentary

  • Obedience to Christ is love. "Be ye holy" is the most ancient rubric of the church; all lovers of God obey it.
    - Spurgeon Devotional Commentary

  • We have, as present possessions, everything whatsoever we desired (asked) from Him. Not one of our past prayers offered in faith, according to His will, is lost. Like Hannah, we can rejoice over them as granted even before the event; and can recognize the event when it comes to pass, as not from chance, but obtained by our past prayers. Compare also Jehoshaphat's believing confidence in the issue of his prayers, so much so that he appointed singers to praise the Lord beforehand.  - Jamieson-Faucett-Brown Commentary

  • As if our apostle had said, "By this we shall make it evidently appear that there is the true love of God in us, if we endeavour to frame our lives according to his commandments;" and this, he assures them, was the great commandment, which they heard from the beginning, when the gospel was preached unto them, namely, that they should believe in Christ, and love one another, and constantly persevere in the practice of these duties.

Learn hence, That obedience is the natural effect and necessary product of love, so is it the best evidence, the surest mark and sign of it. This is the love of God; that is, the surest evidence that we love him, if we keep his commandments.

Learn, 2. That it is not sufficient that we profess love to God and our neighbour, but we must walk in love, and be found in the exercise, yea, in the persevering exercise, of that grace and duty: This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.  - William Burkitt's Notes

  • Love (hê agapê). The love just mentioned. That we should walk (hina peripatômen). Object clause in nominative case in apposition with agapê, with hina and the present active subjunctive of peripateô, "that we keep on walking." The commandment (hê entolê). The one just mentioned with the same construction with hina as in 1Jo 3:23. John changes from the first person plural to the second (êkousate as in 1Jo 2:7, peripatête) as in 1Jo 2:5,7. In it (en autêi). Either to alêtheiâi (truth) of verse 2Jo 1:4, agapê of this verse, or entolê of this verse. Either makes good sense, probably "in love." With peripateô (walk) we have often en (1Jo 1:7,11, etc.) or kata (according to) as in Mr 7:5; 1Co 3:3; 2Co 10:2, etc.. - Robertson's Word Pictures

Pastor's New Sunday School Class

Greetings!

We started this new Sunday School Class at 10 a.m. each week.  We'll meet outside in the pavilion, weather permitting -- otherwise in the fellowship hall by the donut table :)  We'll experiment with the format each week... here's this Sunday's agenda:

  • Open with prayer
  • Brainstorm listing of current events, problems, activities, etc going on in the lives of those present
  • Discussion of how we are currently:
    1. Doing no harm
    2. Doing good
    3. Using the means of grace (Private Prayer, Bible Study, Holy Communion, Christian Conversation, Public Worship)
  • Discussion of ideas & highlights of how the International Sunday School Lesson text for this week may (or may not) apply to what is going on in the personal lives of those present.
  • Ideas for improving the class structure and content next week
  • Closing prayer
  • Fellowship, Mingling, Eating, Leaving, Etc. in the Fellowship Hall

For those unable to attend on Sunday morning, and for all of us who would like to continue the discussions throughout the week by email, I've set up a mailing list discussion group at SpenceChapelSundaySchool@Memphis-UMC.org
Click here to Subscribe.  (or here to UNsubscribe).

I also host the LivingWeb Sunday School Project, so you might like to drop by there for additional insights and discussion about this weeks Bible text.

Thanks!
