Helping Hands of Smithland, Kentucky

Mission

We the members and officers of Livingston County Helping Hands pledge to offer assistance to the citizens of Livingston County that are experiencing crisis situations, assured that by experiencing the love of God through the kindness of others, our community will spiritually grow.

History

Livingston County Helping Hands was founded in 1990 by a group of volunteers concerned for the needs of Livingston County.  Mrs. Connie Faulkner headed this group as they set about offering assistance to those families in need.

Mrs. Faulkner, P.A.C.S. coordinator, was instrumental in motivating members into action.  She soon began the county’s only year round food pantry with donations from local businesses and cash donations from citizens within the county.  Early on the L.C.H.H. group, formerly known as Self Help, began making food baskets at Christmas time.  This effort turned into a yearly event to fulfill the needs of many families seeking assistance with groceries during the Christmas season.

Sister Rosemary Esterkamp, of Glenmary Sisters, moved to Smithland in August of 1991.  She was quick to familiarize herself with the county’s needs and soon became a member of Self Help.  With both Mrs. Faulkner and Sister Rosemary as leaders of the group L.C.H.H. has grown and evolved into a driving force within the community that strives to help those in need.

As L.C.H.H.  grew we realized that the need for the food pantry in Livingston County was much larger than first anticipated.  We soon began to outgrow the storage space at the P.A.C.S.. office and began the search for a larger location.

Livingston County Helping Hands moved to our first solo office/warehouse in October of 1999.  The site is located at 509 Mill Street, Smithland, KY  42081.  In this area L.C.H.H. has room to expand and grow with both the imagination of it’s members and the growing needs of the county.  We hope to offer classes both on food preparation and family budgeting.  In the future L.C.H.H. would like to help educate the county’s young people about the needs that organizations like ourselves fulfill and the gratification that comes with helping to meet these needs.  In doing so, we hope to inspire both young and old to reach out a helping hand when one is needed.

We as members and officers of Livingston County Helping Hands, have committed ourselves to the organization and its efforts to assist the county’s families during crisis situations.
