Robert J. Whetstone July 15, 1923 - February 8, 1997 Robert J. Whetstone was a member of the organizing Board of Directors of the Lawrence D. Bell Aircraft Museum. He was known world wide as "Bob" to his many friends. His acquaintences included Dignitaries, Officers of the Armed Forces, Pilots, and Executives of the Bell Corporation and its subsidiaries. Among his many awards, displayed at his funeral, was a plaque of appreciation given by the Board of Directores of the Bell Aircraft Museum. Bob was born in Mentone to W. Wade and Myrtle McCrea Whetstone. He married Catherine Snider on January 18, 1945 in Homestead, Arizona. She survives along with sons, Jim Whetstone, Tucson, Arizona, Tom Whetstone, Nappannee, Indiana, Mike and Chris Whetstone both of Fort Wayne, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during WWII. A salesman, he lived all his life in Mentone, until the last four years when he was a resident of Lakeland Loving Care, Milford, Indiana. He had served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Mentone United Methodist Church and as Commander of the Mentone American Legion. His work with the Mentone Park System has been applauded as outstanding. Burial was in the Mentone Cemetery and the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars conducted the grave side rites. The family asked that memorials be made to the Bell Aircraft Museum. Memorials and condolences may be sent to his wife Kate Whetstone, Box 263, Mentone, Indiana 46539. Please mention this web site in any correspondence. Bob's wise advice, counsel and unselfish labor are most certainly missed. |
